Kerrera Island: A Tranquil Escape Just a Short Ferry Ride Away Guide

Escape the hustle and bustle of Oban with a day trip to Kerrera Island, a small, car-free island just a short ferry ride from the mainland. This hidden gem offers stunning coastal scenery, historical ruins, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for walking, cycling, and soaking up the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Kerrera is a haven for those seeking tranquility and a taste of island life. Kerrera's history is intertwined with that of the surrounding region. It was once a strategically important location, evidenced by the ruins of Gylen Castle, built in 1582 by the MacDougalls of Lorn. The castle was later besieged and destroyed by the Campbells in 1647. The island also played a role in the Jacobite uprisings. Today, Kerrera is a peaceful community with a small population, primarily engaged in farming and tourism. The main activity on Kerrera is exploring the island on foot or by bike (bikes can be rented on the island). Hike to the ruins of Gylen Castle for breathtaking views of the Firth of Lorn and the surrounding islands. Walk along the coastal paths, discovering hidden coves and sandy beaches. Visit the island's tea garden for a refreshing break. The Waypoint Restaurant offers delicious meals with stunning views. While Kerrera doesn't have a unique culinary tradition, the Waypoint focuses on fresh, local ingredients, including seafood caught in the surrounding waters.
